WAEC 2017 RESULT - 214,952 STUDENTS CHEATED

Waec Result 2017: Some 214,952 candidates cheated in the May-June West African Senior School Certificate Examination(WASSCE) and their results have been seized by the authorities.

Mr. Olu Adenipekun, Head of National Office of the West African Examination Council, WAEC, announced this in Lagos as he also announced the cheering news of a seven percent improvement in the number of candidates that passed the examination with five credits.

SOKOTO - SCHOLARSHIP VERIFICATION COMMITTEE UNCOVERS 706 FAKE STUDENTS

The committee for verification of the actual number of students entitled for scholarship in Sokoto has uncovered 706 fake students and those not qualified for the scheme.
Chairman of the committee, Ambassador Shehu Wurno disclosed this while presenting the report to the state Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal in Sokoto.

LAGOS GOVT. CANCELS VACATION CLASSES

Worried by rising kidnap and rape cases across the state, Lagos State Government has introduced measures during this vacation to forestall any possible ugly situation that may arise in public schools.
The state government had in a memo to all permanent secretaries, tutors-general of the six educational districts in the state, asked them to stop all forms of vacation teaching for rest of the year.
The government attributed the measure to "present security situation and threats by kidnappers" in the state.
A source at the state Ministry of Education, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the directive, yesterday.
The source said: "The state government took the measure in order to find holistic solution to the recent cases of kidnapping and rape in public schools.
"To this end, government representatives will be meeting with stakeholders during the vacation period to deliberate and find a lasting solution to the ugly trend, especially with those schools in the riverine areas, once and for all."

KENYA - LECTURERS CALL OFF STRIKE .


The Universities Academic Staff Union has called off the public universities lecturers strike.
The announcement was made by UASU officials Tuesday afternoon after an agreement was reached with the government on their negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
Demands over the implementation of the Sh10 billion CBA paid off last week when the Ministry of Education promised to disburse the Sh5.2 billion balance.
University Education Principal Secretary, Collette Suda in a letter dated July 13 and addressed to Paul Kanyari, Chairperson, Inter-Public Universities Council Consultative Forum said: "The National Treasury has granted authority to the ministry to incur the expenditure of Sh5.2 billion."

The government had already released Sh4.775 billion to the university lecturers and workers but they had rejected it demanding the implementation of the full amount.

NIGERIA HAS THE HIGHEST OUT OF SCHOOL GIRLS IN THE WORLD - MALALA

Malala Yousafzai has said that though Nigeria is the richest country in Africa, it has more girls out of school than any country in the world.

The education activist Malala Yousafzai who met during her visit to Nigeria with girls displaced by the Boko Haram crisis, said studies are clear that educating girls grows economies, reduces conflict and improves public health.

She said, "For these girls and for their country's future, Nigeria's leaders must immediately prioritise education."

While in Maiduguri, the epicenter of the crisis in northeast Nigeria, Malala visited school children in a camp for displaced families and secondary school girls at Yerwa Government Girls School.

Over 2,295 teachers have been killed and 19,000 displaced and almost 1,400 schools destroyed since the start of the Boko Haram insurgency in 2009. Three million children in the northeast are in need of support to keep learning.

USA CONSUL GENERAL - WE HAVE SPENT TWO DOLLARS AS SCHOLARSHIP FOR NIGERIAN STUDENTS

Over $2m has been spent by the United States' (US) government as scholarships for Nigeria students in the ongoing year through its Education Opportunity Fund, US Consul General, F. John Bray has said.

Bray disclosed this during the 2017 Education USA Pre-departure Orientation programme, organized in honor of seven Nigerian students who are attending various U.S universities this fall.

According to the envoy, "This year alone, students within the Lagos Consulate District have received numerous scholarships from several U.S. universities totaling over $2 million and more are still trickling in through the wonderful work of our Education USA advisors.

STUDENT WHO MADE ALL A'S IN HER WAEC

A female student from Enugu state Ali Cynthia Chineche   passed her May/June 2017 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) with flying colours. The student set the record high after she made all A's in her nine subjects. Chineche’s teacher, Chibulu   Austin, who was proud of his student’s achievement, shared her result to the world via his Facebook post.

 In his post, Austin noted that he is very proud and happy to have taught a lady with great  learning, “Today we have produced and I am very much proud teaching this lovely and wonderful lady in a great citadel of learning."


 You may recall that the 2016 (WASSCE) also produced a Kaduna state student who also made all A's. The West African Examination Council after releasing the results indicated that more students scored credit passes in 5 subjects and above compared to 2015 and 2016 .
