The former Deputy Senate president Ibrahim Mantu has blamed
the underfunding of the nation’s universities on the government uncritical
acceptance of reforms initiatives introduced by the World Bank.
According to him for many decades now, the federal
Government has not made concerted effort to reposition Nigerian Universities
for sustainable development, he said this while delivering a lecture on the
role of universities in National Development at the Ritman University,
Ikot-Ekpene in south-south Nigeria.
Apart from the impact of the economic crises on the funding
of the universities which started in mid 1980s, it is known that Nigerian government
and policy makers uncritical accepted the reforms initiatives introduced by the
World Bank, this led to severe cut in budgetary allocations to universities.
