SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS PROTEST IN OYO STATE
Hundreds of students of secondary schools in Oyo state took to the streets of Ibadan, on Monday, to protest the plan of the state government to involve individuals, old students' association and missionaries in the running of public secondary schools.
Holding leafs and chanting songs against the education policies of the Governor Abiola Ajimobi led administration, the students in their uniforms marched through Oke-Ado, Molete, Agodi gate axis to government house and state secretariat, Ibadan, where they met a brick wall of mobile policemen.
The students chided government over the planned 'privatisation' of schools, non payment of the salaries of their teachers and parents, and failure of government to account for their payment of N1,000 per term as Education Development levy.
In obvious obedience to the order of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to its members, hundreds of civil servants besieged labour house and Magistrate court, Ibadan, to follow up on their call for the release of the seven labour leaders in detention since last Friday.
Speaking at labour house, some of the NLC members alleged that they were being harassed by certain members of the public in their several gatherings this morning, especially at Magistrate court, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
They have resolved to wait at labour house in anticipation of the release of the detained labour leaders.
The big entry and exit gates at State Secretariat were locked while security personnel screened every person on entry at the only pedestrian gate opened.
