INEC MAKES U- TURN ON EDO ELECTION

Why INEC shifted Edo poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rescheduled the Edo state governorship election to September 28.

The electoral body said yesterday that it took the decision based on a request by security agencies. The Department of State Security and Police Force Headquarters in a joint statement Wednesday demanded the polls be postponed.

The Police and DSS said intelligence reports have shown that terrorists had planned to attack vulnerable populations.

INEC brushed aside the request earlier in the day after a meeting with stakeholders and announced that the election would hold as scheduled.

However, after a second meeting late afternoon in Benin yesterday, INEC National Commissioner in charge of voter Education, Prince Solomon Soyebi, told reporters that the election had been pushed forward.
He said at about 6pm yesterday, the commission received official communication from the police drawing its attention to the need to postpone the election.
