BENUE STUDENTS PROTEST NON - PAYMENT OF 5 YEARS BURSARY ALLOWANCE

National Union of Benue State Students, NUBESS yesterday protested the non-payment of their bursary allowance for 5 years.

The students who were led by the national president Vincent Iorshe to Benue people’s house Makurdi, carried placards with various inscriptions, like Benue students demand their bursary allowances, enough is enough, our allowances must be paid etc.expressed disappointment with the governor, who according to them did not fulfill his campaign promise of prompt payment of bursary allowance when elected as governor of the state.

Speaking on behalf of the students, the national president Iorshe who appealed to the governor to redeem his image by ensuring that all bursary allowances owed students are paid up to date to alleviate the hardships faced by some students especially now that their parents are being owed salaries.

Responding, governor Samuel Ortom commended the students for a peaceful demonstration, and urged them to always use dialogue in approaching issues and appealed for patience saying both the federal and state governments are working round the clock to see that the present situation improved.

Ortom who further explained that the non payment of the bursary allowances was not a deliberate attempt by his government to frustrate students but due to the present economic recession directed the commissioners of finance to release N20 million for onward payment to some of the students, adding that promising to settle all outstanding allowances in the near future.
