The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), on Monday flagged off its training of field officers for data collection on the level of school compliance to its professionalization of teaching in Nigeria.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP in Abuja, the registrar/chief executive of TRCN, Prof Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, said this is the first time the council is organizing such a data collection process where field officers are dispatched to visit schools with a view to collating data from the primary source.

He reinstated the resolve of the council’s management on the need to get authentic, reliable and accurate data of teachers for the development of Teachers Information System (TIS) and that the level of school compliance to the council’s professionalization drive cannot be overemphasized.

According to the registrar, this will help the council to make an informed decision on the process of professionalization drive.

“The data collection on the level of school compliance to professionalization is being pilot tested in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ascertain the effectiveness and reliability of the process.

“This will help the council to improve on and scale it up to other states. Data plays critical role in educational planning and decision making.”

Calling on the field officers and supervisors to accord the exercise the required priority for effective data collection, he said data collection is capital intensive and that the success of the exercise squarely rests on their shoulders.

Ajiboye also reiterated that the council through the TIS intends to establish an effective communication medium with Nigerian teachers by developing and deployment of TRCN Application (TRCNApp), where teachers will download on their android phones and obtain information on operations of the council.

He urged field officers receiving the training on the data collection process to appreciate the opportunity to acquire as much knowledge and skills of field work.

Earlier in her remarks, the Director, Planning Research and Statistics of TRCN, Mrs Ruth Ansari said that data is the major tool for national development, therefore, the need for data on teachers in all ramifications for planning and decision making cannot be over-emphasised.

She said the data collected through the exercise can be authentic, reliable and verifiable therefore can be used at both national and international levels for effective planning.
