Fire outbreak forces Yabatech to suspend exams, lectures
The management of Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) has suspended all academic activities including the on-going examination and lectures following fire outbreak recorded in the institution.
In a statement signed by the College's Public Relations Officer, Dr ‎Charles Oni, the institution's management also confirmed that some of its students who were residents in the hostel were injured while the fire lasted.
"Sequel to the unfortunate fire incident at the Bakassi Hostel early this morning, the management has suspended all academic activities until further notice.
"By this notice, all examinations and lectures, especially scheduled for today have been put on hold while College attends to the exigency," a part of the statement read.
The management further added that: "The management regretted misguided and outright falsehood on social media and calls to certain radio stations that there was no water on campus to quell the fire. The truth is that firemen needed excavator to attend to the fire, which the College provided.
"Meanwhile, the Rector, Dr. Margaret Ladipo, has called on the College Community to remain calm as the management finds way to soothe the pain inflicted by the accident.‎"
The  fire outbreak it was  gathered to have started by 5:22am after power supply was restored.
Some of the students who are residents‎ of the hostel confirmed that when the outbreak was on, the fire service truck brought in by the school management lacked water needed to out of the fire, thereby aggravating it's effect.
"We were all standing watching helplessly as the inferno raged on. The school fire service truck that came early had no water. It took about two hours before fire service men from Lagos State Government came to the rescue.
"By that time‎ some of our students have fainted, some have sustained injuries and while others have lost valuables to the inferno," a HND II student at Fine Art Dept. who simply identified himself as Hakeem said.
