Students of the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State, have expressed sadness over the unduly hike in Kerosene price as a litre is now sold for N500 in black market and N400 in filling stations.
A cross section of the student described the situation as ‘distasteful”, saying it has even made life intolerable for them especially with the bad situation of the country.
Mr Godfrey Daniel of the Department of Electrical Engineering said that life as a student is more challenging as he spends all his money to buy kerosene at N500 per litre to cook his food, which unfortunately is also expensive.
“Things are just too bad that the little money we are given to come to school with would be spent to buy just kerosene and even the food you want to cook is also expensive. Things that were formerly sold cheap and at affordable prices are now doubled”.
“It really calls for consideration. The students are really suffering. We pay for practical and other things in the school and yet to feed is a big problem because of how expensive things are.”
The Electrical Engineering student called on the government to please intervene.
Miss Nnenna Nwokocha, of the department of Maas Communication said it hasn’t been easy to buy kerosene at N500 per litre.
“It has not been easy but we thank God. I don’t cook beans anymore. I wait for the electricity to be restored before I can cook my beans because I try as much as I can to manage my kerosene”.
She also stated that it was distracting to their education, saying, “it distracts us from our aim of being in school. When we are in the class receiving lectures and anytime the light is restored, we dash off to make use of our electric stove before it goes off”.
Miss Mariam Mustapha of the department of Business Administration and Management added that “I bought four litres for N1, 800 and I felt bad while paying the money. The government should please intervene. We have suffered enough, the foodstuffs are high and even things to use in cooking the food are also high.”
Meanwhile, the students have urged the government to put measures in place to help ease the current hardship in the country due to the economic recession that had doubled the prices of goods in the market.
