TASUED STUDENTS PROTEST INCREMENT IN FEES

The students of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Monday embarked on a protest in Abeokuta over increment in fees and payment of student tax in the institution.

Many students of the institution who stormed the capital city, Abeokuta in about seven ‘Aluta buses’ first arrived the Oke Ilewo secretariat of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists.

The students carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Say No to N10,200 Tax Clearance’, ‘Amosun Save TASUED, and Fund Education’ and ‘Say no to N25,000 vocational studies fee’ among others.

Listing their grouses, the students who spoke through the Student Union Government President of the institution, Sanni Adeyemi, complained that the acceptance fee of the new intakes had been increased from N30,000 to N40,000 while the final clearance fee for graduating students had also been increased from N25,000 to N45,000.

Adeyemi also said the school authorities had equally increased vocational studies fee from N1,000 to N25,000, which he claimed had been turned to registration fee.

The students further condemned the payment of N10, 200 student tax and described as unjustifiable the N1,500 as fee for the reprint of lost final clearance document in the institution’s admission office.

With all these fees, the students said that education has been commercialised in TASUED.

Adeyemi said, “Education is supposed to be the leading social responsibility of the government. It is supposed to be seen as the major way of giving back to the society but had turned to a source of income and revenue for some people.

“Education is totally commercialised in TASUED. You pay for everything.”
