AUCHI FEDERAL PLOY MOVE TO END STRIKE
The Management of Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, Edo State has set up a committee to resolve and end the ongoing strike by lecturers of the institution.
It would be recalled that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics (SSANIP) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (NASUP), had embarked on an indefinite strike on February 6, over failure of institution’s management to enroll members on “CONTISS 15 Migration Salary Structure for Level 11 downward, promotion arrears and alleged indebtedness of N1.8billion owed the unions.
Speaking with newsmen on Tuesday, the acting Rector of the institution, Engr Jafaru Buraimah, said the committee is expected to present a report to the management latest on Friday and if positive the school will be reopened immediately for the commencement of academic activities.
The acting rector said that issues raised by the unions have been explained and expressed displeasure over the union’s action of preventing willing staff access to their office there by halting academic activities in the polytechnic.
The Acting Rector disclosed that direct and indirect engagement with the unions has yielded no positive results as they have insisted that the migration of salary on CONTISS 15 must continue against the Federal Government directive in 2015 which suspended further payment.
He noted the union leaders have been briefed about the promotion of Senior Non-Teaching Staff (2015), Senior Teaching Staff (2016) and Senior Non-Teaching Staff (2016) which are awaiting the approval of the Minister of Education.
According to him, “The outcome of the extended management meeting that was that the management decided to setup a nine man committee to mediate between the management and the unions and ensure that the school is open and academic activities is resumed in earnest”.
“With the setting up of this committee and we have given the committee a deadline which is Friday and if by Friday the result is positive, hopefully next week the school can open”.
He further stated that, “The management is very proactive with the Student Union Government. We are meeting with them constantly and we update them on how far we have gone with the negotiation with the unions”.
“This is not the time for apportioning blame. The unions over time have been fully briefed the development and circulars made available to them. They are very much abreast of what is happening on that they just want hold tight to that issue of CONTISS 15 migration.
“If the federal government doesn’t not cash backed it, it’s not possible,” he added.
