The National Association of Nigerian Students has described as unjustifiable, an alleged attack on protesting students in Lokoja, Kogi State, on Monday.
While demanding the “unconditional release” of students arrested during what it called a peaceful protest, the organization threatened to continue mass protests within and outside Kogi State until all tertiary institutions “under lock and key are reopened for academic resumption.”
According to NANS, the Kogi State Government has not reopened all its tertiary institutions which have been closed for the past six months due to unpaid salaries and arrears.
A statement issued in Abuja on Monday by the President of NANS, Chinonso Obasi, said the refusal of the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, to accede to the demands of the academic staff union and all other affiliated unions was one of the strange expressions of how deeply the Kogi State government resented education and staff welfare.
Obasi said that to add salt to injury, the state government, instead of pacifying the students, chose what he called the wrong path.
“This amounts to a flagrant assault on our members for lawfully demanding the reopening of their campuses,” he stressed.
