Parents having kids without knowledge of parental responsibilities is accountable for numerous social problems the society is facing today, the Emir of Kano Muhammad Sanusi II has said.
He made the comment on Thursday in a remark when the United Nations Children's Education Fund (UNICEF) representative in Nigeria Mohammed Malick Fall paid him a courtesy visit in his palace in Kano.
He said about 3 million children in Kano are out of school due to ignorance of their parents on their responsibility to their children's educational up-bringing.
He advised parents to change their thoughts and perceptions about the education of their children especially girl-child saying it is the only way the society could achieve the desired change.
Speaking about parental responsibility he stressed that "for you to have kids you must make sure that the responsibility of their education, health, and general up-bringing both morally and otherwise are part and parcel of what a parent should do".
Emir sanusi whose proposed family law for Kano has been a subject of debate in public domain recently, affirmed that change is always difficult in any society especially when it touches on their old tradition.
He however reiterated his determination to ensure that he brings positive change to the lives of his people.
He called on various stake-holders including the Ulamas, technocrats, students and youth leaders to support and promote his developmental initiatives for the good of the general society.
The UNICEF' representative, commended the Emir over his visionary leadership and advocacy on issues relating to children especially girl-child education. He asked for the prayer and support of the royal father to enable him succeed as the country's UNICEF representative.
