UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN SHUT INDEFINIATELY

The Management of the University of Ibadan has shut the institution indefinitely .

The students expressed their displeasure over the suspension of a union leader by the students’ disciplinary committee and non-availability of some amenities needed on the campus. In addition to their suspended leader, the students complained about lack of power and water which they said had made learning difficult for them.


The protesting students disrupted lectures in lecture rooms when they used canes to chase their colleagues away. Also, all entrances to the institution were locked by the angry students. The protest denied both staff and other visitors to the institution access into the premises.


While explaining what led to the closure of the institution, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Abel Olayinka said the decision was occasioned by violent protests which, he added, had led to “life-threatening acts and text messages” being sent and received around the campus


with some students allegedly covering their faces during the protest. He directed all students of the institution to leave the campus by 4pm yesterday.
