FIVE THOUSAND OUT - OF - SCHOOL CHILDREN ENROLL IN NON- FORMAL LEARNING IN ADAMAWA

The Executive Director, Adamawa Agency for Mass Education, Charity Dubi, says about 5,000 out of school children have been enrolled in non-formal learning centres in the state.

Ms. Dubi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Yola on Friday that the measure was part of the initiatives to mark the 50th anniversary of World Literacy Day.

She said the development followed the state government’s collaboration with the “Education Crisis Response” supported by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID.

“From 2015 to date, about 5,000 vulnerable children in the state were enrolled in 99 non-formal learning centres in seven local government areas of the state,” Ms. Dubi said.

She explained that under the programme, 14 community coalition groups were established and trained to implement the Community-Based Action Cycle for Mass Education in the state.

She said that the learning centres were located in Fufore, Girei, Numan, Shelleng, Song, Yola South and Yola North Local Government Areas.

According to the executive director, seven master trainers received training and in turn trained 99 learning facilitators.

She explained that additional 198 formal school teachers and 21 mentor teachers were deployed to the seven focal areas for effective instruction delivery in reading, numeracy and emotional learning.

Ms. Dubi said lack of funding was among the major constraints affecting smooth implementation of the agency’s service delivery in the state.
