In a statement by its chairman, Dr Deji Omole and Secretary, Dr Peter Olapegba, respectively, ASUU said the move would be resisted with all its vigour. According to the letter that had been forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor, they said the proposal is antithetical to the welfare of members of the union.
The union leaders argued that lateness in announcing promotion was not the fault of the candidates but that of the administration. While insisting that all those owed the promotion arrears must be paid in full, they warned that the proposal would not guarantee industrial peace when welfare of their members is threatened. They advised the Vice Chancellor and his team to think of ways to refine the promotion procedure so that people are promoted as at when due. It therefore asked the University Administration to continue to pay promotion arrears of academic staff in full as at when due.
